A piece of the sun in a box to use an unlimited, clean and safe source of energy. In the ninth episode of the Factory of the Stars Piero Martin shows us one of these hi-tech boxes: the Rfx experiment based at Consorzio RFX in Padova. Here a steinless steel vessel. Here a structure shaped like a donut hosts a plasma with temperature of about 15 million degrees centigrade. Rfx is a Reveresed Field Pinch and it has a lower magnetic field. From an experimental point of view researchers showed that Rfx performs best when plasma assumes a helical shape shape and theoretical physicists studied the phenomenon with numerical codes. Moreover, highly technological measurement instruments around Rfx helps diagnosing plasma microturbolence, plasma macroscopic properties and its stability. In Rfx plasma stability is controlled with a complex feedback mechanism with by 192 magnetic colis.
