As part of the contract for the supply of 18 DTT Toroidal Field Coils (TFC, Figs. 1-2), ASG Superconductors has completed the qualification activities preparatory to the start of series production.

These qualification activities included, among other, the manufacturing of a mock-up of the straight section of the magnet leg, with transversal dimensions in real scale but only 1 m long.

The mock-up was also effectively used to qualify the integration operations of the winding pack inside the casing structure that must be carried out before delivery of each TFCs to DTT site.

During the qualification, fiber optic sensors for measuring deformation and temperature, were inserted on the winding surface; sensors are called upon to monitor the operating conditions during cooling process, from room temperature to the 4.5 K operating temperature.

To qualify the efficiency status of the sensors after the operations of welding and vacuum impregnation, the mock-up was cut into some pieces, one of which (Fig. 3) was delivered to DTT to evaluate the opportunity of their installation on the final coils.
